Power Skills are skills that college graduates should obtain in order to be successful in the workforce. The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) identified the following eight competencies associated with career readiness:
SKC uses Handshake, an online career services management platform, to coordinate on-campus employment and advertise jobs from tribal, local, state, and federal government agencies, corporations, and private entities. All students are strongly encouraged to activate their accounts on Handshake and explore the hundreds of jobs and internships available locally and across the nation. How to easily find SKC on-campus employment and internship opportunities on Handshake
To make finding all student employment and internship opportunities on Handshake easy, follow these steps:
- Log in to Handshake
- Click “Employers” on the top navigation bar.
- Enter “Salish Kootenai College: Student Employment and Internships” in the search box.
- Click “Follow”.
- Go to the Jobs - Employer section. Salish Kootenai College: Student Employment and Internships will now show up on top of the page.
- Click on the link to see the list of all available SKC student jobs and internships.
- Your jobs feed will now show SKC student opportunities at the top of the list and you will receive notifications via email every time a new position is posted.
Federal Work-study Program
The purpose of the Federal Work-Study Program (FWS) is to expand part-time employment opportunities for students with great unmet financial need. FWS jobs complement and reinforce each recipient’s educational program or career goals to the maximum extent possible. All current openings are posted on Handshake. Please note that your Federal Work-Study Program application must be approved before your job application(s) can be considered. Project Success Paid Internship Program
Internships are an excellent way to network with potential future employers, gain hands-on professional experience, build your resume and confidence, and develop the skills and knowledge required in today's workplace. Thanks to generous funding from Ascendium, Project Success Paid Internship Program offers a limited number of paid internships each year to eligible students in all majors. Please check Handshake often for current openings and contact Career Services to discuss designing an internship that specifically matches your interests and career goals.

SKC Boys and Girls Club Internship Program
The BGC internships allow students to utilize their education and experience to teach the local youth while simultaneously providing the interns with financial support and real-life teaching and mentoring experience that will translate into continued education, future jobs, and caring, productive citizens.
SKC Community Health & Development Internships
SKC Community Health & Development provides services to promote health and wellness for tribal communities. Interns engage in planning and assisting with activities while gaining hands-on experience in health promotion and prevention (nutrition, wellness, diabetes), food sovereignty (traditional foods, language, and history), physical activities (Native games), and substance misuse. All currently available positions are posted on Handshake.

TRIO SSS Academic Tutors and Mentors
TRIO SSS Student Academic Tutor supports the program's goals of improving student retention, academic standing, and graduation rates. The Academic Student Tutor is one of the essential sources of academic, personal, and career guidance for Student Support Services participants. This position is less than part-time scheduled each quarter of each academic year.
SKC TREES Internships in Natural Resources
Are you interested in a career in natural resources? The Salish Kootenai College Center for Tribal Research and Education in Ecosystem Sciences—SKC TREES—has opportunities for tribal and non-enrolled students of Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs). TREES places college students in science-based internships with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the U.S. Forest Service, and other qualified partners. Positions available for Fire and Forestry with BIA Pathways. The program offers tuition support, summer jobs, and non-competitive, post-graduation career placement.
Micro-Internships
SKC has partnered with Parker Dewey to offer our students the opportunity to pursue short-term, professional, paid work experiences through micro-internships. Through Micro-Internships, students can demonstrate their skills, explore career paths, and develop their professional networks.
- The internships can be completed remotely!
- These paid opportunities typically range from 5 to 40 hours of work.
- Students can be selected for multiple Micro-Internships.
Part-time Jobs at SKC
SKC frequently offers part-time jobs to current students. The positions range from Business Office Receptionist to Maintenance Tech and Security. All currently open positions and application instructions are posted on the Employment Opportunities at SKC web page.
All Nations Alliance for Minority Participation (ANAMP)
The Louis Stokes STEM Pathways and Research Alliance: All Nations AMP (ANAMP) is an initiative funded by the National Science Foundation focused on increasing the number of Native American students successfully completing degrees in STEM fields. ANAMP provides financial stipends, conference travel assistance, and research opportunities to eligible AMP Scholars. Benefits are limited to students enrolled in qualified STEM degree programs at our partner institutions. Please visit the ANAMP website for more information.
